2. Constructional Features
- Yoke: Provides mechanical support and
forms the magnetic return path.
- Field poles and shunt winding: Produce
the main magnetic field when supplied with DC power.
- Armature core: Laminated core designed
to reduce eddy-current losses.
- Armature winding: Conductors in which
current flows to produce electromagnetic torque.
- Commutator: Reverses the armature conductor
connections as required to maintain unidirectional torque.
- Brush assembly: Provides electrical
contact between the stationary supply and rotating commutator.
- Single shaft: Provides mechanical
output from the motor.
- Cut-section construction: Exposes selected
internal components for visual identification and instructional
demonstrations.
- Metal mounting base: Provides stable
support during laboratory use.
3. Experiments and Learning Objectives
The AL-E380 DC shunt motor can be used
for the following educational activities:
- Study of DC shunt motor construction
and operation.
- Identification of the yoke, field
poles, armature, commutator, and brushes.
- Understanding the shunt field winding
connection.
- Study of the working principle of a DC
motor.
- Demonstration of the relationship
between field flux, armature current, and torque.
- Study of speed variation by field
control, using a suitable external training arrangement.
- Observation of the commutation process
and brush assembly.
- Understanding the characteristics of a
DC shunt motor under varying loads.
4. Working Principle
A DC shunt motor operates on the
principle that a current-carrying conductor placed in a magnetic field
experiences a force. The interaction between the armature current and the
magnetic field produced by the shunt field winding generates torque, causing
the armature and shaft to rotate.
The shunt field winding is connected in
parallel with the armature supply. Because the field current remains
comparatively stable under normal operating conditions, the motor generally
provides reasonably constant speed as the mechanical load changes.
The back electromotive force is
expressed as:
